Web3 Game Adoption Hinges on Free-to-Play Approach, Says YGG Co-Founder

Gabby Dizon, co-founder of Yield Guild Games, believes that many Web3 games will switch to a free-to-play model in order to attract more players. He says that the current play-to-earn (P2E) model is too restrictive and is preventing mass adoption.

Dizon told Cointelegraph: "There's an evolution of the business model where the games are free to play, and then at some point along the way while you're playing, then you're able to mint an NFT or start earning tokens, but a lot of new games aren't really starting with requiring NFT ownership at the start."

He argues that if Web3 games are going to become mainstream, they need to be accessible to everyone. This means making them free to play and removing technical and financial barriers to entry.

Dizon also believes that there is a need for developers to focus on making games that are fun and engaging first, and then worry about tokenomics later. This is a response to the criticism that many P2E games are too focused on making money and not enough on providing a good gaming experience.

The shift to a free-to-play model is already underway. Some new Web3 games, such as Axie Infinity Classic, have already adopted this model. Dizon expects to see more games following suit in the coming years.

In addition to the move to free-to-play, Dizon also predicts that we will see more innovation in tokenomics and earning models. This could involve new ways for players to earn rewards without having to invest money upfront.

Dizon also believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a role in the future of Web3 gaming. He says that developers will use AI to create new game mechanics and experiences.

Overall, Dizon is optimistic about the future of Web3 gaming. He believes that the industry is learning from its mistakes and is moving in the right direction.
